    Show
    Hi guys,

If you have a chance, come check out 'The Nerd' this weekend at the South Lyon Theatre. This production is also doubling as a fund raiser to help support The Phoenix Players remodel the historic Green Oak Towhship hall into a permanant theatre house. This theatre group is head up by Anne Levy, theatre director for MSU. Her contract with MSU will be up in two years and by that time, her goal is to have this theatre perform year-round shows and workshops, and also offer Equity contracts.

We apologize for having this show at the South Lyon Theatre (its a bit unkept), but this will most certainly be the last show we ever perform there.

    Hello lovely
    Wow...

I have been so lost in Facebook-land I forgot how much I love Livejournal. I feel like I am sneaking a blog away from my random 200+ friends on there, but most of them I havent seen in about 10 years and I could really care less if I go a lifetime without seeing them again. Is that bad? 'No' would be the correct response there...

So I have somehow managed to completely fill every waking second of mine with:

    -I am in a show.
-I am coaching my daughters soccer team.
-I am assistant coaching my other daughters soccer team.
-I was elected to the Board for a theatre company.
    -I still work full-time (HELLO!)
-I get offered random dramas at the Naz and do them all.
-I still operate a small online business.

    So...

Well, the show and the soccer will be over at the end of May, then life will get back to normal.

    Hope everyone is doing well.

Rehearsals began last friday for 'Treasure Island'.

I went from playing Smollet, Blackbeard, Mad Dog, and Walleye to playing Smollet and Billy Bones. They decided to recast last week and failed to mention it to anyone. Our rehearsal on friday was...

    ...well...

...the director dragged out four enormous bins of colorful costumes that not one of which was related to pirates, but nonetheless made us 'dress up' in as much of this shit as we could wear and improv pages 26 and 34. They gave my Blackbeard part to...

    ...I shouldn't say it...

Let's just say it was a rough start to Wild Swan premiere show. I am glad I wasn't alone in the utter confusion and frustration of day one. I ran into the cast member who is playing Long John at a comic store and he said "hey man, good to see you...by the way, what the FUCK was friday all about?!?" I smiled and replied "no fucking idea, dude..."

So, rewinding a bit, we dressed up in curtains, aprons, gloves, masks, etc, etc, etc. When rehearsal began, it looked like we were doing 'Blankman, the musical', but with a little more Down Syndrome involved.

I love this theatre company, I really do, and I hate to soung negative, but what the hell?!

    Seriously.

    Well, the awards are over.

    Yep.

    Whatever.

That's what I felt after watching last nights Oscars, 'whatever'.

Jon Stewart seemed to have a speech impediment whenever he used the letters 'sh' or 'st' together which was terribly annoying. His jokes were okay, but not fantastic. The awards winners were okay, I guess. The collages between, well, everything, were...okay.

You see where I am going with this?

Perhaps I just expected an extraordinary show due to the Globes being canceled. The best part of this show was that I got to see three songs from 'Enchanted' performed live, and yes, I love that film and have made no effort in hiding it. But of course, they lost.

Jon Stewart had one joke that floored me though, I can't remember it. I liked the '...she went from being an exotic dancer to a professional writer...hows the pay-cut?' joke.

Well, that's it. I am not even certain why I still watch the Oscars, they never do it for me anymore. I much prefer the Independent spirit awards, SAG awards, and even like the Globes. The Oscars are just too...blah blah blah.

    What have we got here?
'Tracks' opened yesterday. Both shows were well received, despite the near heart attack I had in the final scene of the first show. I can't go into details for it would spoil the ending for those of you who may see it...but let's just say I am supposed to discover something during the last scene that wasn't able to be discovered, but it was fixed at the very last possible moment. The second show yesterday was stellar, and both today were good too.

I had considered dropping my contract for Treasure Island, I just have been too stinking busy. But since, well, yesterday, I realize how much fun I have working with this theatre company. I would be a moron not to do the next show, it will just be a difficult stretch. So, apologies ahead of time, I may not really be available to hang until May.

This also marks the first show that I didn't smoke! Really, I quit April of '06- but I usually end up buying a pack when I am in a show just to take the edge off, perhaps. I haven't needed it this time, so I guess thats it! I also have not drank alcohol since my friends band had their CD release party last september or october, I can't really remember- but I know its been a few months. For those of you who have known me for years, yes, I am changing. And this change feels good.

Our business is blowing up right now. We just brought on another young ambitious guy who already has been making good money. Actually, a bunch of us last night got together and played Whirley Ball for two hours and it was awesome. It was my first time, but for those of you who don't know what it is, its bumper cars meets basketball meets lacrosse, kinda...just play it, its fun.

Anywho, happy Valentines day everyone! I hope you all are doing well.

    Well gang,

Katie Holmes is a skank and I hate her.

    But on a lighter note,

Who got cast in Marat/Sade? I know Jenn did, but anyone else I might know? Who got the leads? Reliable people? If not, I'll call Hartman and see if he needs an understudy.

'Tracks' is going well. Only half the cast returned this year for it and the 'replacements' are doing a great job. Well, except for one. I want to punch this one. He thinks he shits golden nuggets. But, whatever. It has been an unusual experience, playing the same part with two different casts. I wonder what Brian thought of Lend me a Tenor II? I actually like the way my character is playing with the new cast; several minor changes, but it feels better. I hope the show is as well received as it was last year, we have a lot to live up to.

I have been feeling really disassociated with everyone lately. I have been extremely busy, and many people have called to make plans that I keep shooting down. I hope noone is thinking that I am blowing them off, my schedule has just been stacked lately, thats all. I called an old friend the other day and he answered the phone shocked. Not sarcastically, it was genuine shock. He said 'Ryan, my god man, what have you- how have you- WHERE have you been?!?!". I'll do a better job to make time, I promise.

I just got back from seeing 'Enchanted' for the second time. Yes, I did it voluntarily. The film is awesome, and yes, I am straight. Maybe. Dempsey is one sexy SOB.

    Another one bites the dust...
    Well,

I was shocked to learn that Heath Ledger died yesterday at the ripe old age of 28. Just like so many have in the past, he left us too early. I am only six months older than Heath, and I have always followed the careers of fellow actors in my age range perhaps to diligently. Maybe because I could always see myself in those roles, and I study them and often find myself wondering 'how would I have played that role?'

"10 things I hate about you" was the first time I had ever seen Heath perform. I must admit that I didn't like the film, but appreciated his performance nonetheless. The Patriot, Monsters ball all good follow ups but I really took to "A knights tale". I never wanted to see the film due to the trailers clashing Medieval times w/ Rock&Roll. I thought it would never work. It was actually that film that helped mold some of life, sounds crazy, right? It was that film that made my wife and I chose a Medieval theme for our wedding; wait, I have something even crazier. It was that film that inspired the name of our second daughter, Jocelyn. Actually, the character in the film was named Jossalyn, but that's where we got it. I became a Heath fan for life after that under-rated flick. And of course, the supporting cast was phenomenal too.

Obviously Brokeback Mountain vaulted him to A-list status, but it was the smaller films that I loved the most. Lords of Dogtown, The Brothers Grimm and The Order were all solid films. I would kill to have a career over the span of my entire life like the one Heath had at the young age of 28.

And of course, he is, or was, the new Joker.

Heath, we'll miss you, man. Sorry I will never have the privilege to meet you and work with you, but I will admire you forever. You did good with your short time.

    comPOST
Well, it has been a while, I am about due to update.

    1) Rehearsals start Thursday for Along the Tracks.

    2) I have all my Christmas decorations up and shopping DONE.

    3) I have seen two movies recently, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Enchanted. I may be sacrificing my dude card, but I LOVED Enchanted.

    4) Business is grand, and I am using the word 'grand' with double- meaning.

    5) I saw 'Charlottes Web' performed by The Wild Swan Theatre. Um, I love these people, but it took my the first twenty minutes to get over the fact that they were all playing animals. It was cute.

    6) I miss you guys!

Let me know if you guys are getting together for a holiday celebration, I would love to attend; if I am invited, of course. Later.

I'll have my piece of cake now.
    Hello all,

Well, the results are in! I have been contracted for two shows next year (thus far) with The Wild Swan. They are:

    - Along The Tracks (reprising the role of Garrett)
    - Treasure Island (Role(s) TBA)

For more information and show dates/times, please visit http://www.wildswantheater.org/ , or view my calander at http://www.myspace.com/ryeiver ; click 'view all' then '2008'.

These shows may pose a conflict with Marat/Sade, which I had planned to do this winter, but will do my best to work it in. The Wild Swan pays though, get the picture?

Also, I am having a blast as a Stage Manager! The kids in this show are very talented and coachable, and they are just so much fun to work with! I hope this show turns out well, they have all worked very hard and they deserve it. Now, as for the adults in this production...

On wednesdays I have been meeting with a new Improv troupe at the Park Bar in Detroit. This improv collective was founded by my old Switchplay castmate Julian Gant, and you will definately being reading posts in the future about our shows.

My family is great! They love school!

I just don't have anything negative to say! That's a first, eh?

    Have a randy dandy, day!

    into the great, wide open
Well, I have accepted the Stage Manager position that was offered to me by The Phoenix Players for their show 'Laura Ingalls Wilder: Voices of the Prairie'. I will also have some stage time taking on some smaller roles that won't prohbit me from my Stage Manager duties. Oh, yeah, and they are paying me, which is where some of my motivation is coming from with this project. The other, is that I actually have always wanted to try my hands in Managing/ Directing. I will not tell you which show, but there was one that I performed in at Schoolcraft College that I actually wrote on the audition form that I wanted to Stage Manage. Then, of course, he had me read and that ended my hopes for Managing that show.

Anywho, this should wrap up the year for me theatre-wise, except for a film project here and there.

    Update
    Hey gang,

Just wanted to let you know that I am excited about things to come. I turn 29 in October, and I think this 29th year will be life-changing. There is so much I plan to do, and for once, I may actually be able to accomplish all of the goals I set forth for my next year on this planet. I never have New Years resolutions, I prefer to do it birthday- to- birthday...I find that timeline more significant.

Some quick updates on our life:

-Our business is starting to make a little money.
-I accepted a new position at Lowes that frees up all of my evenings and most of my weekends. About frickin' time, eh?
-I have made a commitment to follow-through on my commitments. Sounds lame, but this has been a struggle throughout my life. For starters, last spring I told Mr. Hartman a few shows that I would not hesitate to do if he were to stage one, and from rumors around the troupe, it sounds as if he may be putting on one that was on my list. In short, you may see me on the Schoolcraft stage this season.
-I am contracted for at least one show with The Wild Swan Theatre next season.
-I am hoping to coach Haleys fall soccer team this year.

Thats about it, i'll drop in once in a while and keep ya posted.

    You are the Hanged Man

    Self-sacrifice, Sacrifice, Devotion, Bound.

With the Hanged man there is often a sense of fatalism, waiting for something to happen. Or a fear of
loss from a situation, rather than gain.

The Hanged Man is perhaps the most fascinating card in the deck. It reflects the story of Odin who offered himself as a sacrifice in order to gain knowledge. Hanging from the world tree, wounded by a spear, given no bread or mead, he hung for nine days. On the last day, he saw on the ground runes that had fallen from the tree, understood their meaning, and, coming down, scooped them up for his own. All knowledge is to be found in these runes.

The Hanged Man, in similar fashion, is a card about suspension, not life or death. It signifies selflessness, sacrifice and prophecy. You make yourself vulnerable and in doing so, gain illumination. You see the world differently, with almost mystical insights.

To sum up the last few days is simple: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Let us start off with the good...

Congradulations to my bud John Sloan III, who was in 'Along the Tracks' with yours truly (he was the slave that could sing) for being cast in the national tour of a little show called 'Lion King'...perhaps you've heard of it?! Awesome.

And then there was the bad...

For the last month and a half I have been preparing for an audition I had scheduled with the Tipping Point theatre. I have been really busting my ass memorizing three songs in contrasting styles and of course, the monologues that are always required, and had an excellent feeling about this audition. I have NEVER felt more prepared for one in my entire life, I even saved my vacation time in the event that I got cast. Well, let's just say, the audition never happened and all I was left with was unreturned phone calls. There was an issue with my scheduled appointment, thursday at 5:30, so the director told me to come to the callbacks at 5pm on friday and she would read me. Well, there was no callback. There was nothing...

    The Ugly...

After an eventful night at the Ground Round on Friday, plans were made to head over to a friends house. As I left the bar, I was not paying attention and drove into the Michigan U-turn lane as if I were going home, then realizing it, I jerked back onto 6 mile. 'No big deal' I thought, but the patrol car with his flashers on felt otherwise. I explained the story to him and he seemed unconvinced and he ran me through all of the sobriety tests. Well, I passed them all with flying colors, even saying the alphabet backwards which I can only do when I am lit apparantley. The cop asked me "Are you headed home?". This is where I got into trouble, a stupid simple question. "Yes" I replied. So I hop back in my car and start heading over to my friends house (which is the opposite direction from the highway I need to get home) and I get maybe a quarter mile away and he pulls me over again. He snaps at me "Home is the other way isn't it?" If you had witnessed my behavior that evening, you would understand why I replied "Well, sir, that depends on which way your facing." "Excuse me?", he snapped. Now comes the only part of the story that made me smile today, I said "Sir, there is more than one road to Idaho". It doesn't look that funny typing it, but you had to be there. I was holding my laughter in so hard that I actually had cramps. He administered a breathalizer, to which I passed, thank you. Needless to say, I did make it 'home' thanks to my new friend escorting me all the way to the Wixom road exit on 96, just to make sure I was heading in the right direction. I also dropped my cell phone and I can't get it to turn on again, so Joe, I am sorry I couldn't call you back, I hope you didn't worry, and Cody, I am sorry I didn't meet you for lunch today, I had no way to get your number. Monday I should be getting a new phone, so hand tight until then.

    Whew.

I should have said 'The Bad, The Ugly, and The Good'; because even after two days of frustration and anger, when John emailed me today that he got into the show, cheered me right up. That is incredible news. He was there in NY when I was there, couldn't get a gig, he then get's his AEA card in Philly doing Aida, comes back home to MI and wow, his life has changed. He was cast in Michigan by-the-way. Makes me feel really good...

    Lets recap:

Tipping Point lacks organization, Cops lack a sense of humor, and my man John, well, knock 'em dead, you deserve it.
